commandN #80

20 02 2007

commandNThis isn’t the first time that one of my sites has been mentioned on commandN, but it is pretty cool to see it up there. It’s one of the few video podcasts that I am able to keep up on.

They linked to my site about Google opening Gmail up to the everyone, and the funny Gmail ad on YouTube.

If you don’t watch commandN, you should. Check out Episode 80 here, and subscribe to their video podcast using iTunes.

When’s Amber going to invite me up to co-host a show with her?

Flickr users up in arms

31 01 2007

Last night, I got a ::insert sarcasm:: oh so friendly email from “The Flickreenos,” telling me that since I’m an “Old Skool Account-Holding Flickr Member” member of the Flickr community, that I now must move my account over to a Yahoo account.

I don’t know if you’ve ever read this blog before, but I tend to dispise Yahoo. Google is my preference when it comes to searching, email, calendar, docs, spreadsheets, notebooks, chat, video, start page, and more. I don’t use Yahoo one bit. Not for anything. Was I glad for the Flickr team when they got purchased by Yahoo, ehh not really. I don’t like Yahoo, never have.

I do love Flickr though. It’s awesome. I even created a successful website “empire” around Flickr, which I later sold for quite a large sum. I even PAY for the Flickr service. Flickr’s announcement also will involve limiting contacts to 3000 (to “improve system performance”), I have to start asking popular Flickr users, to not delete me? I thought Flickr was all about social networking!

There seems to be quite a large number of folks pissed about this. Thomas Hawk chronicles a number of the complainst posted on Flickr’s forums.

zooomrI will NOT be changing my account over to a Yahoo one anytime soon. The cut off is March 15th, and if there isn’t some sort of alternative offered, I will have to reconsider my personal choice in online photo hosting. I currently have an account on Zooomr, of which Thomas Hawk is the CEO. Looks like, I’m not going to be the only one moving my photos over there.

FlickrLicio.us & Amanda Congdon

13 07 2006

What do these two things have to do with each other, well I didn’t think much, but as it turns out there was a blogger who recently found out that both are gone from their previous positions.

As previously mentioned, I sold FlickrLicio.us and it looks like there is some nice development going on over there. I can’t wait to see the finished product.

One year ago…

12 07 2006

I realized I’ve been using Wordpress to blog for quite some time now….well over a year. I found a cool plugin that allows you to see what was blogged about one year ago today. It’s on the sidebar, so check it out next time you are on the site.

Below I posted the items posted on July 12, 2005. Looks like I launched FlickrLicio.us one year ago today.

…from July 12, 2005…

Sold: FlickrLicio.us

15 06 2006

I was contacted by the creator of FlickrBabes about purchasing FlickrLicio.us since I Flickr decided they didn’t want to allow hotlinking to the site any longer. He purchased the site for an undisclosed sum.

I have been assured that he has great plans for the site, I look forward to see what evolves. It was a great site and I’m glad that I was able to provide that service to everyone for as long as I could.

1000 Wordpress posts

27 04 2006

I realized today that I am up to 1000 blog posts on Wordpress. I had about 1000 with my old software, Radio Userland. It’s funny in many ways I am not even using the full power of Wordpress. I don’t have the Wordpress WYSIWYG interface, I just write out all the code.

Here is a link to my first post with Wordpress back on June 25th, 2005.

I have to say that I really like Wordpress and the flexibility it offers. Thru using it, I’ve learned some php along the process. It’s a great piece of blogging software, and it’s FREE!

Technically with all my blogs combined it isn’t my 1000th post (FlickrLicio.us had over 30,000 posts), but on this site this is post 1000.

Thanks for such a great product Matt, Ryan, Alex King, and everyone else who created WP!

Fate of FlickrLicio.us

28 03 2006

Well the fate of FlickrLicio.us is all but decided. There are a few options out there, but I would need your help to employ them. There has been mention of an AJAX type solution to block the host making the request for the hyperlink. I know this can be done with a simple config switch in Firefox, but it would be nearly impossible to ask everyone to do that.

If you have any tips or would like to help on a solution for the site, I emplore you to email me with any ideas. If you are a coder and can help out, it is all done with php and mysql. I will allow you any access you need to work on a solution.

For now, I will be working on a solution. Other than that, I don’t know what else to do. I just received this email below from Stewart Butterfield the President of Flickr:

Nick - it’s not a personal website. Personal websites are not bought or sold, and they are not made for monetization.

A few counterpoints. I used some marketing techniques to elevate the status of FlickrLicio.us by suggesting that the site was purchased. It NEVER was. It’s been me the entire time selecting and posting each and every picture individually.

I only had one Google style ad block on the site and the site wasn’t around to make money. I started the site because I wanted an RSS feed with beautiful women in it delivered to me daily. I started the site for myself, more than anyone else.

Flickr is not obliged to pay the hosting costs for your site. Your pro account has nothing to do with flickrlicoius and you’re not entitled to anything here. I’m not sure where you got that idea.

I mentioned that I was upgrading servers, but I would of never suggested that Flickr pay for that. What do I look like an idiot?

We might have been willing to discuss this had you not posted our addresses again. There is no other reason to do this than to encourage harassment.

When I did post two email addresses for Stewart and Heather Champ, I made sure to not use the @ symbol or even a .com in the email address. I understand the need to reduce spam emails. I was only trying to allow the readers of the site to find a place to voice their opinion.

Flickrlicious will not be unblocked.

- Stewart

So that leaves us here. I have replied explaining that I was never purchased, that I only created a buzz to get the site moving, and that all ads have been removed from the site.

I guess it’s a waiting game now. Either find a solution or remove the site. It’s a shame that it has come to this. I’ve really enjoyed being able to provide this service for millions and millions of people. It’s a shame it might be coming to an end.

Again if you have any ideas, send them my way. Thanks for your readership and loyalty.

Nick Starr

P.S. NickStarr.com isn’t being shut down, just another site I run FlickrLicio.us.
