More Evidence of iTunes Digital Copy?

11 01 2008

Fox Digital Copy

Here are some spy shots of the new Family Guy - Blue Harvest Special Edition (w/ limited-edition collectibles) DVD from Fox that will be released on Tuesday. There is no mention on the back of the box of iTunes, iPods, or the digital copy. There is however a special sticker on the front of the shrink wrapping indicitating it comes with a “Digital Copy.”

Fox Digital Copy

Fox has done this before with movies like Live Free or Die Hard, and even has a website setup for Digital Copy (link), with no mention of iPod support. The problem is that Digital Copy has never worked with an iPod, Zune, or PSP. Will this new Digital Copy work now with an iTunes or was the previously leaked screenshot a fake? The world will know on Tuesday after Steve Jobs gives his keynote at the Macworld Expo & Conference.

Essential Apps for my iMac

4 12 2007

imac al

If you follow me on Twitter, you would know that my 20″ iMac is inbound and scheduled to arrive this Thursday. It’s been nearly 2 months without my own computer, let alone a mac. Since that time, Leopard has launched and a number of other great apps that I want to try out. There are a ton of great applications for the mac the help make the experience more enjoyable. So I figured I would go though and try and list the apps I will be installing.

1) Adium - My favorite IM client for the mac. Sure I will be using the new iChat to try out all of the cool new video conferencing things, but for straight chat, Adium is the best.

2) Firefox - Safari may of come a long way, but my favorite browser is still Firefox, second to Camino.

3) Camino - I’ve never really been a fan of the Greasmonkey hacks to get multiple Gmail accounts open on the same browser, so Camino has always been a great way to manage two accounts for me, plus it’s a great browser built specifically for the mac by the makers of Firefox.

4) Twitterific - Since I had my mac they have gone version 3.0, and yes its now a paid product, but the ads aren’t that bad from what I’ve heard.

5) Cyberduck - The best free FTP client for the mac.

6) VLC - When it won’t play in Quicktime, it will certainly play in VLC, along those lines I will also be installing Perian

7) Perian - The Swiss Army knife for Quicktime. This plugin allows you to play almost any video inside of Quicktime, thus being able to take advantage of Quick View right from the new Leopard Finder.

8 ) iWork 08 & Office 2004 - Both of these apps come pre-installed with a new mac, I just need to enter my serial numbers for both.

9) Parallels - Sure my copy of Vista Ultimate and Vista Office Ultimate were stolen, but I am sure to get another copy soon, and Parallels is the best program for running Windows based programs inside of the mac.

10) Skitch - I got an invite from my Twitter friend, Brian Caldwell over at Plasq (makers of Comic Life) and I can’t wait to try out this nifty program for photo grabbing, editing, etc.

This list is just a few of the great OS X apps I will be installing. There are plenty of others that I want to try out, and old favorites that have just slipped my mind. I do want to say that I’ve NEVER liked Quicksilver, and only slightly been a fan of Google Desktop for Mac, but now that Spotlight is an app launcher, I might not use either. Lastly, Pixelmator once it shows up on one of the MacSanta/MacHeist/Discount Mac bundle sites, I will be buying that as well. It is a great OS X only alternative for Photoshop.

How to get a free iPhone (or Blackberry Curve)

28 11 2007

bb curve 8310

AT&T is really pushing their Blackberry line, and why not? The Blackberry Curve 8310 with GPS is the best phone I’ve ever used. It was more functional, flexible, and felt better in my hands then any phone I’ve owned…and I’ve owned a lot, including the iPhone. The iPhone is a very close second to the BB Curve. Well let me show you how to get either one for free.

If you want the Blackberry Curve, and you are a new customer to AT&T, you can simply go on Amazon and buy the BB Curve 8310 with GPS, and after rebates, you make out with $50.01 in cash and a free phone. That’s it…simple as that. Cold hard cash and the best cell phone ever made.

iphone

If you are wanting to get a free iPhone, the steps are a bit more involved, but not by much. Buy the BBCurve like mentioned above. Then go online to GSM PhoneSource and get an unlock code for $19. Finally, put your newly unlocked BBCurve (make sure to keep it pristine and sell as new), on eBay where they are selling for upwards of $400.

That on top of the $50.01 you made just from buying the Curve from Amazon will net you enough cash to buy an iPhone including tax.

There you go, a free iPhone, and heck you might even have some extra money left over for a nice case for that newly purchased Jesus phone iPhone.

Buy via Amazon

P.S. This is the method I went about buying my iPhone, but Amazon wasn’t offering such incredible rebates, so I was able to get the AT&T store to match the Amazon price at the time of paying $50, this this method, you can pocket $50 on the purchase of a Curve.

iPod Classic 80 vs 160

5 10 2007

iPod classic

If you’ve been reading this blog for any length of time, you know that I more often then not go out and buy the biggest most expensive Apple product the second it comes out. With my move to SF, I wasn’t able to buy an iPod Classic when they first came out, but now that I have a job (BTW I got a job!!!!) I can now spend that $100 Apple iPhone credit and buy a brand new iPod Classic. The question is do I go 80 gigs or 160?

new ipodsA while back I lost ALL of my music and was able to re-download the iTunes purchases. I’ve built my music collection back up to around 45 gigs (including music, movies, podcasts, etc). Does it make sense for me to spend the extra $100 for a thicker iPod when I won’t even be filling up the 80 gig anytime soon?

Recently I haven’t been buying much music, and I have all of the cd’s from the bands I enjoy. So what is the point of expanding my music library beyond the confines of what my laptop HD can hold? (I’ve had some bad luck with external laptop HD’s recently as well)

So the question is, do I spend the $149 (plus $100 store credit) for the 80 gig or do I spend the $249 (plus $100 store credit) for the 160 gig iPod which I won’t be filling up anytime soon?

Your thoughts?

Apple’s iPod Touch

13 09 2007

Apple iPod Touch

Today at the International Mall in Tampa, Fl the iPod touch arrived as an in-store model. There was no account setup on it, but the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store was fully working (minus downloading). The feel is SIGNIFICANTLY thinner then the iPhone, and it is wafer thin. It does feature the reflective mirror styled back ala the iPod Classic and new iPod nano, so it is smudgy and can get scratched easily. Also, the lock button is on the opposite side of the iPhone.

The Wi Fi music store DOES NOT allow you to search for music videos, podcasts, etc only music. There is no downloading of any podcasts via the built in Wi Fi, but I know Dave Winer would like this feature to be included in future software updates.

Other then that the Wi-Fi with Safari works just as well on the iPhone. The inclusion of an address book icon is a nice touch. If you aren’t really that thrilled with AT&T, I say DON’T get the iPhone, you will love the iPod touch. THIS IS THE BEST IPOD APPLE HAS EVER MADE.
