Unboxing: 80 gig iPod

20 09 2006

iPod 012Here is the official unboxing ceremony of my new Apple 80 gig white iPod. Is it me or does the box seem a bit wider on this iPod?

iPod 019Well there isn’t too much exciting except for the new headphones, which fit very comfortably into my ears.

Pandora

20 09 2006

Okay, well today I seemed to open Pandora’s box. I found a link to this music service, Pandora,  that offers unlimited music streaming. You can see album art, give a song a thumbs up or down, buy from iTunes or Amazon, save as a favorite, etc.

The way it all starts off is with one band or song. I typed in one of my favorite bands, and it automatically loaded up a ton of music that I’ve been listening to for about 5 hours straight. After the first few songs, they request that you register to keep listening for free. The only fee involved is if you want the ad taken off the page, but it isn’t a major issue, so free is for me.

Once you register, you can create multiple “radio” stations that are customized to your listening needs. I am using it to find a bunch of new music that I will be downloading onto my new 80 gig iPod (more on that in a bit).

Check it out today and find new artists.

USB AA battery

20 09 2006

usbcellchargeNow this has got to be one of the coolest ideas I’ve seen in quite some time. It’s a real AA battery that is charged thru USB.

They are currently only avaliable in the UK, but I am sure that there will be a US model soon. Price in the UK is: £12.99 which works to about $24.53.

Maybe a bit pricey, but I use usb all the time to charge my gadgets, what better way to use a usb port, but to also charge my batteries.

Check them out here.

Pearl: Bluetooth modem

19 09 2006

bbpearlmodemiOne of my major gripes about the Blackberry 8700g is that it was never able to be used as a modem under OS X. I have even suported Alex King’s bounty to get it to work on the OS X, however per the bounty, the solution must be found within the next 11 days. I don’t see that happening anytime soon.

The new Blackberry Pearl though does allow for modem use over the EDGE network on T-Mobile. I found a script to enable the use under OS X over on Fibble.org. It was quite simple. Download the script to /Library/Modem Scripts/, setup the bluetooth on the phone using the info below:

  • Username, Password: leave blank
  • GPRS CID: *99***1#

Finally, In the Internert Connections blutooth tab, put wap.voicestream.com as the phone number, and guest/guest for username/password.

I am getting speeds as fast as 200k, which is the upper limit of EDGE, from the Speakeasy speed test. T-Mobile’s EDGE speed pretty much peeks at that speed, so I’m getting the full bandwidth. It isn’t the fastest wireless connection, but it certainly works better than paying for T-Mobile’s service at Starbucks or some other random service at at airport.

I know Alex is waiting to upgrade till there is a QWERTY version of the Pearl (which is rumored to not have a camera and be model 8800), but I for one have gotten used to the SureType within days and am so happy with my purchase that I’ve already sold my Blackberry 8700g. I just hope the 8800 has modem support as well.

P.S. The internet service you get thru the bluetooth modem is covered in your unlimited blackberry plan from T-Mobile, so no additional fees are involved.
