What a weekend

Nick Starr | January 23, 2006

I don’t think I can begin to explain what happened this weekend, there’s almost too much. Here are some of the hilights.

I got my Media Center PC (yes a PC, don’t bash me, I still love macs) up and running. I got TVTad working with the help of Patrick from Nobody Likes Onions. . I REALLY love the MCE and being able to have all of my media (either on the pc or streamed from the mac) accessable by a single remote. FrontRow has NOTHING on MCE. Sorry, it had to be said. FrontRow is great, but it can’t record tv.

Speaking of TV, I called to cancel my HD DVR service and digital cable with Brighthouse, and it turns out we only save about $4 per month by doing so. At the same time, I took off some stupid HD pack, and bumped our internet from 5mpbs to 10mbps.

With all of the shows being downloaded on bittorrent, web pages were going at the speed of dial-up. They reset the modem and it went to 10mbps, AND EVERYTHING WAS FLYING. I’ve never seen the web so fast. I was dowloading at over a meg a second, and webpages were popping in like nothing. Sweet.

I ordered a 250 Serial ATA HD for my MCE from NewEgg for $100…I can’t believe that a terabyte of space can be had for only $400, and it be sata at that.

Winding down the weekend, I was in the latest Nobody Likes Onions podcast, that came out on Sunday. There is a segment where I talk about this girl that contacted me from MySpace and DateNickStarr.com. I was talking with her on aim for a while last night, and someone in the show thread posts that her pictures can be found at a certain webcam style website. Read the thread for more details.

Well, I tell Patrick about it, and he doesn’t believe that it is her. She says that she works for the website. I ask her to webcam me thru yahoo or aim, but her webcam is down until Wednesday. So, the plot thickens in this whole thing. There are some items that lead me to believe she is telling the truth. I am a HORRIBLE cynic when it comes to these things, because I’ve been hurt and burned more times than you want to know. I’m sure that if it is her, that she will be able to prove it one way or another. Either way, the girl is amazingly beautiful, and I can’t believe that she would even fill out the DateNickStarr survey.

Well that was my weekend, oh yeah I installed iLife ‘06 this weekend as well, and couldn’t get photocasting to work w/o a .mac account. Does anyone know of a website created with iWeb that has a link to automatically add the photocast to your iPhoto?

P.S. I’m sure your weekend was much more entertaining, but this is as exciting as mine get.

Yahoo Gave Search Data To Bush Administration

Nick Starr | January 20, 2006

Yahoo Inc. on Thursday acknowledged handing over search data requested in a subpoena from the Bush administration, which is hoping to use the information to revive an anti-porn law.

Yet another reason to dislike Yahoo, Google is fighting the goverment tooth and nail over this one, where as Yahoo is laying, and giving away your private information like the little bitch they are.

Flickr’s Mob

Nick Starr |

Did you know fickr has a mob? Mob being short for mobile of course. It’s at Flickr.com/mob, and it works amazingly well on the Sidekick II and Nokia 770 (which is still going back).

Here’s what the Flickr site says about it: “And another nifty feature is you can even surf Flickr from any web-enabled cell phone or PDA: just go to http://flickr.com/mob/ on the web browser. This works on any XHTML-enabled browser (we recommend Opera, if that is available on your phone). There you can see your latest pictures, your friends’ latest pictures, upload from the web interface, leave comments on other people’s photos, and even see the latest comments on yours! (Tip: bookmark the upload page for easy access.) “

I’m going to spend the weekend implimenting the mobile site into some of my projects.

Take that Greasemonkey

Nick Starr |

To combat the need to go to a 3rd party (ie. Greasemonkey) for scripts that are not supported by Google’s TOS, for a simple delete button, Google has added it for you!

I am confused on this one. Google has up the Help Center info about how to use the button, but I don’t see my delete button. The page was updated 1/17. What’s going on with my Gmail?

Anyone else have this new button, and if so what browser are you using?

Update: Seems to be working for most everyone, including myself on IE (pc), Firefox (mac & pc).

Off to work

Nick Starr |

Well all good things must come to an end, but as Dan Cathy said, “Don’t go into work with excuses that you were up all night. They don’t care. Go into work and give 110%. Go above and beyond any one day’s worth of work.”

So I head home to chance clothes, then I’ll be at work…with a fully belly, the words of some very inspirational people to help me thru, and a smile on my face for a task well done.

I was told if you visit Chick-fil-a.com they have a “Grand Openings” section of the site. Check it out and head on out to one of these events. I promise, you will leave with more energy than which you came.

As for my live-blogging of Chick-fil-a, I’m done for today, but I am sure there will be another one opening soon.

P.S. The funniest part of the whole thing, is as much as I complained how cold it was, I managed to get a tan on my face. Go figure.
