iPod USB Charger

1 12 2005

My favorite iPod accessory company, Griffin, has introduced a great alternative to Apple’s USB charger. Apple charges $29 for their charger, but it doesn’t come with a cord.

Griffin launched their PowerBlock recently for $29.99. It has a usb port like the Apple one, the prongs retract for easy travel, AND it comes with a usb iPod cord.

It works with:

• 5th Generation iPod with Video
• iPod nano
• iPod shuffle
• iPod mini
• iPod Photo
• 4th Generation iPod with Click Wheel

My brother was looking for a charger for his iPod, this is a perfect solution. Same price as the Apple version, yet includes the cord.

I still can’t figure out why 3rd Gen iPods can’t charge over USB. The pins for charging must be the same right? I would think so since the same USB 2.0 cable that you can charge a 4G with will plug into a 3G as well. And the Y-Cable works fine charging on Firewire, but not USB.

I guess they could have gone to the trouble of having unused pins on the 3G that are then used on the 4G to only connect to the power leads of the USB connector. But why? That would mean there are two different sets of power pins in the cables since they all support both the 3G and 4G models.

Sorry for the hijack. But I thought maybe I could find an answer here. Apple won’t answer me and other forums say “Just because”.
